Last week I was really pleased to receive my verified certificate for the English Grammar and Style (Write101x) online course that I undertook on the edX platform. This post contains my final thoughts on the course.

Initially I had hoped to have more posted here on Elemental Fiction, about my experiences with the course. Unfortunately life got in the way and took up most of my time. There were some weeks were I was struggling to find time just to complete the content for the week.

Having completed the course, I am in no way under the illusion that I am now an expert in English grammar and style. I know that I still have a great deal to learn. I feel that this will be one area, where I will be a life long learner.

The two main goals that I had when starting the course were; to improve my fiction writing, and to improve my technical writing as part of my work.

I feel that I have achieved these goals. When writing my fiction I will still make use of the After the Deadline service. Now that I have completed the course I have more information to understand the problems with my writing that the automated service finds. More importantly, I now have a better understanding of some the common mistakes I make, and fix them before the automated check.

If you are sitting on the fence wondering if you should ‘take the plunge’ or not, I encourage you to at least give it a try.

Now that I have spent some time improving my skills in writing, it is time to put what I have learnt into practice. Over the next month I will be hard at work on my next short story. I look forward to sharing it with the world when it is ready.
